One of perhaps the most asked questions by those who see or even meet a Cathyan is ‘are you a cat?’ it is an unsurprising question after all the Cathya species does resemble a bipedal cat much as imagined across the decades and if not centuries by writers and artists, however to say that the Cathyan race is feline would be like saying a dog is a cat. While there are similarities both in structure and outward form that is about as close as the two races truly get.
Cathyan’s are an omnivorous race with a genome that has about 80% commonality with both human and Warrior; they are unable to naturally interbreed with either race. Commonly the Cathyans stand between 7 to 9 feet tall, have extremely dense bone and muscle structures along with a full pelt that covers them from head to toe. Each hand, has six digits four ‘fingers’ and two opposable thumbs each with a very complex section of bone and cartilage that form retractable claws that can grow up anywhere from a few millimetres to about 5 centimetres in length each of which once formed are denser then steel and sharper than any other known natural cutting substance it has been recorded to actually penetrate hardened battle steel and even those of the unity will show great respect to a pissed off Cathyan. Their eyes which are much like those of Felines are designed by evolution, their natural habitat on their home world Catha has a dense forest canopy and that for much of their early stage they were cave bound or possibly even sub-terrain. This gives them vision well beyond that of a human and while little known they actually see on ‘two’ completely different wave lengths. On the normal wavelength their vision gives them the full range of colours that humanity has as well as further into the red and green spectrums, while on the second wave length their vision goes deep into the infrared spectrum, allowing them to see heat.
Hearing wise they actually hear about the same as a human feline, however their sense of smell is considered second to none, beyond that of any known species on earth. While it has never been confirmed it is believed that the Cathyan are capable of using their sense of smell as secondary ‘sight’ and it is well known and documented that it plays a vital part in their communication as they produce a complex set of pheromone reactions something which actually makes many believe they have telepathic communication ability though this is untrue. Rather Cathyan’s have no less then twelve unique sent glands each capable of producing specific sets of chemical markers which can then be read by other members of their race. These markers are used for everything from letting another member know that they are hurt, hungry or as humans have found one specific sequence lets them know ‘were horny and ready to mate’.
Internal biology the Cathyans bones are as mentioned extremely dense, this is in part due to the 1.5g gravity of their homeworld, they have two hearts which work in tandem to pump blood throughout their bodies, four lungs and most other organs are similarly doubled except in regards to their kidneys and liver of which they have only one of each.
Society wise the Cathyans are a strange lot, they rose through their history from Matriarchal tribe society where the females have the power and the males tend to be the muscle, this actually shocks many given that male cathyans outnumber female cathyans three to one. Approximately 10,000 years ago the Cathyans achieved space travel, however a series of wars lead them to choose to only expand their presence to three colony worlds it also drove much of their society completely underground something which was emulated on their colony worlds. This ‘lack’ of visible technology actually led the first human’s to believe that the Cathyan’s where far more primitive than they truly where, something the Cathyans where more than ready to foster at least until the humans began attempts at colonizing their worlds, at which time the Confederation found themselves suddenly facing a race not only more than skilled at fighting on their own worlds, but also one that had interstellar capable ships more capable than that of the humans.
After the destruction of two human cruisers Pilot Captain Deacon Harding called for a cease fire and though the actual events after are classified he managed to negotiate a treaty with the Cathyans that has remained in place ever since.
One part of that treaty was that the three worlds of Catha belong solely to the Cathyan Imperium, that no human would enter the space without permission and in return they would leave humanity alone. In effect the known segments of the treaty simply stated that they wished to be left in peace, this however has not stopped the races from intermingling, many young Cathyan’s leave their worlds as they come of age and they can be found travelling within human space as can their merchant traders and in the past five years a small Embassy was opened on Earth allowing for the first time humans to actually request ‘visitors’ visas into Cathyan territory.
